Ann Horton was the third child of William Horton & Elizabeth Hale born Jan-March, 1862 at Lower Gornall, Sedgley, Staffs.

In 1871 Ann, her parents & brothers & sisters were living at 4 Prices Rd, Lower Gornall, Staffs.

Ann married Isaac Silvers on December 12th,1881, at St James, Dudley, Worcs.  Isaac was born February 24th, 1860 at Dudley, & christened March 19th, 1860 at St Thomas, Dudley, Worcs, the son of Fanny Jackson & Thomas Silvers, a nail forger. Isaac’s father died soon after his birth & his mother married again, her second husband being John Edwards.

In 1891 Ann (Annie in census) & Isaac were living at 150 High St, Eckington, Derbyshire.  Isaac was a coal miner & he & Annie had 7 children by this time – Thomas (10), Emily (8), Samuel (6), William (5),  Kate (3), Joseph (2) & Enoch (1 month).

Ann died, aged 39, in Jan-March 1901, her death being registered at Chesterfield (includes Eckington), Derbyshire.

Isaac married very soon after Ann’s death. On February 24th, 1901 he married Martha Hickman, their marriage being registered at Eckington, Derbyshire.  Martha was in fact Ann’s younger sister, born January 27th, 1864 [h.1.4.3.5].  Martha had married  Isaac Hickman in 1883 at Dudley register office.  Isaac Hickman had died in April-June 1900 at Dudley, aged 42.  (There is some question about the marriage having taken place as the entry for the marriage banns is crossed out & written as cancelled.)

At the time of the 1901 census Isaac Silvers & his 'wife' Martha were living at 54 Sitwell St, Eckington & Isaac was now described as a coal miner hewer.  Eleven of the 12 children from Isaac’s first marriage were still at home, all except Emily.  The 3 oldest sons all worked in the coal mine - Thomas was a road man below ground, Samuel was a pony driver & William worked as lamp man.  Also with the family were 4 children from Martha’s first marriage,  namely step-son Eli Hickman (12), step-daughters Jenny (13) & Nelly (10) & step-son Leonard Hickman (4).

An advertisement in the Sheffield Evening Telegraph of August 3rd, 1901 states that ‘Isaac Silvers of 54 Sitwell St, Eckington will not be responsible for any debt or debts my wife, Martha Silvers, may contract’.  Obviously the marriage had not run smoothly & by 1903 Martha & Isaac had both married again.  For the continuation of Martha’s story see Martha Horton [h.1.4.3.5].

Isaac married for the third time on June 27th,1903 at Eckington.  His third wife was Kate Govett. Kate was a widower & her father’s name was given as Arthur Lafferty.  Interestingly Isaac’s daughter Emily’s marriage to John William Brown was recorded on the same page of the Chesterfield marriage register!

Son Isaac Thomas married Beatrice Harris in 1906.
Daughter Kate married John Willie Fidler, a coal miner, in 1908.  In 1911 they were still living in Eckington & with them was Kate’s brother Joseph, a coal hewer filler.

In 1911 Isaac & Kate were living at 30 Sitwell St, Eckington & Isaac was still a coal miner hewer.  The census states that they had been married for 7 years & had 2 children – daughters Louisa (6) & Ethel May (2).  Also living with them were Leonard Silvers, the last child of Isaac & Ann, & Annie Silvers (9), listed as daughter, who was born in Salford, Lancs.

Son James William married Annie Elizabeth Brown in 1909 & in 1911 they were living at 21 Sitwell St, Eckington where James William was a coal miner. Living with them were his brothers, Isaac Thomas, also a coal miner, Enoch & Ernest Frederick, both pony drivers below ground.

In 1911 daughter Emily & her husband John William Brown, a coal miner hewer, were living at 193 Barrow Hill, Chesterfield.  The census states that they had been married for 7 years & they had 3 children – Harold William (6), Edmund (3) & Gladys May (11 months).  Also with the family was Annie Ramsdale Silvers (8) who was listed as ‘daughter’, probably the daughter of Emily.

Son Joseph married Ada Bradley in 1912 in Eckington.
Daughter Elizabeth Ann married Walter Hingley, a coal miner, in 1917 in Eckington.
Son Ernest Frederick married Bertha Thompson in 1921 in Bucklow, Cheshire.
Daughter Nellie married James Edward Edge in 1926 in Chesterfield.
Son Leonard married Harriett Daffin in 1928 in Chesterfield.
Son Enoch married Mary Ellen O’Donnell in 1929 in Chesterfield.

Isaac died on June 22nd, 1937, aged 77, his death being registered at Chesterfield.
